Monday 19th January 2015: Birds, Binoculars and Birdwatching

The first meeting of 2015 was a busy one. We welcomed several new members to the group.

In our joining activity we created a fabulous ‘roosting tree’ made from recycled Christmas cards – featuring lots of birds in the branches and other wildlife around the base. We also made a selection of Christmas gift tags that we’ll sell to raise money for our Hen Harrier fundraising.

In preparation for this year’s Big Garden Birdwatch we learned how to use binoculars properly and safely and we identified some of the more commonly spotted garden birds. (As it was an evening meeting we cheated, using a washing line pegged with handy cut-out birds).

Everyone made brilliant Owl Frames to take home – personalised with lots of character!

We played lots of games: Garden Bird taboo, The Feather Game and Find Your Flock which called for lots of enthusiastic flying round the room!

Explorers Harriet, Tilly and Ben had a very special ‘ Mortimer moment to recognise their amazing achievement selling more than £130 of pin badges at Prestbury C of E Primary School following the school’s involvement in the Big School Birdwatch. Special mention also goes to Ben’s School friend Milo who sold cookies to add £9 to the donated money.
A super start to the calendar year!

Remember to complete your own Big Garden Birdwatch this weekend – 24-25 January 2015 – and send in the results to The RSPB so that we get an even better picture of how well are garden birds are doing.
