Leaders were pleased to join the Jodrell Bank Arboretum volunteers to run a special Big Garden Birdwatch with them. Things started really well with a whole host of hungry birds visiting the feeders by the potting shed – long-tailed tits, blue tits, coal tits and nuthatch. The team then went on a short walk around the Arboretum in search of additional species.Great views over the field were had of red legged partridge, carrion crow, mallard and a large flock of redwing. Volunteers spent a bright, sunny morning with the Nursery and Reception classes at Terra Nova. The children regularly feed the birds and as well as window feeders an impressive collection of different seed and peanut feeders were hung in the trees along with fat balls and fat-filled half coconut shells. After learning a little bit about the different kinds of garden birds and how to use binoculars safely we were ready to begin our birdwatch.
